Back from TouringPeer Gynt | Irina Brook Premiered in July 2012 at the Salzburg Festival, Irina Brook’s Peer Gynt was on tour in France from January to March in Nice, Paris, Narbonne, Mâcon, Pau, La Rochelle, Angoulême and Pontoise…a grand reunion of the wonderful troupe for this remount!
Brook’s fiercely fresh vision of the piece is given a spiky freedom by the jumpily livewire songs provided by Iggy Pop and by the specially written poems by American dramatist Sam Shepard that take Ibsen’s original ideas and sentiments (themselves originally written as verse) and turn them into laconically rebellious lyrics (…) Brook, hugely talented daughter of the great Peter, stages the trials with an indelible vividness. | Swayambhu | Kuchipudi | Shantala Shivalingappa BACH – day 1 |Sonia Wieder-Atherton – Shantala Shivalingappa Louvre of Abu Dhabi, from 30th March to 6th April 2018 Shantala was invited to present two different programs between March 30th and April 6th for the inaugural season of the prestigious and brand new Louvre Abu Dhabi: To start with, Shantala and renowned Cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton , performed their duet « BACH – Day 1 », directed by Stéphane Ricordel, on one of the beautiful open-air terraces of the museum, surrounded by water, thus merging with Jean Nouvel’s minimal and pristine architecture. A few days later, accompanied by her four musicians from South India, Shantala danced Swayambhu, a Kuchipudi recital centered around the figure of Shiva, the Lord of dance. The program was greeted by a standing ovation by the enthusiastic audience! |

Impro Sharana | Shantala Shivalingappa – Ferran Savall Teatro Nacional Saõ João | 4th, 5th, 6th May 2018
Impro Sharana, concert for a dancer by Ferran Savall and Shantala Shivalingappa was back on stage for a remount in Porto!
This program was premiered in 2014, commissioned by the prestigious Mercat de le Flors (Barcelona) and its director Francesc Casadeus to coincide with the release of Ferran Savall’s album IMPRO. This « concert for a dancer », in which music and movement are constructed together, connects Ferran’s soulful music and Shantala’s dancing, accompanied by Driss El Maloumi (Oud), David Mayoral (Drums), Jordi Gaspar (Double-bass), Nedyalko Nedyalkov (Kaval).  © Impro Sharana 2014 | Gorgio Pace

| aSH | By Aurélien Bory for Shantala | Production Cie 111 – Aurélien Bory Festival Montpellier Danse | 27th to 29th June 2018 « I met Shantala Shivalingappa in 2008, in the corridors of the theatre, in Dusseldorf with Pina Bausch. (…) It was a time of strong convergence that seems almost unreal to me, considering that it brought together a number of elements which were going to be significant to my path and to that of Shantala’s.(…) I pictured Shantala dancing on ash for aSH, the title of which is made up of the initials and last letters of her name. Ash is not merely the solid residue of perfect combustion : it is a process. Ash is a fertiliser. It is part of a cycle of death and birth. Ash therefore possesses the potentiality of life. Is this why it is sacred in India? Shantala constantly travels back and forth between Madras where she was born, and Paris where she lives. Her dance mirrors this perpetual swinging, somewhere between Hindu mysticism and quantum physics. aSH is the final opus in the trilogy of portraits of women, ten years after it began in 2008 with Questcequetudeviens? (What’s Become of You ?), followed by Plexus in 2012. In this trilogy, my starting point is not space, which is my usual subject matter in theater, but a woman, a person who has her own story. This trilogy is about a living being unfolding through dance. With aSH, Shantala Shivalingappa dances beyond herself. De retour de tournéePeer Gynt | Irina Brook Créé en juillet 2012 au festival de Salzbourg, le Peer Gynt d’Irina Brook était en tournée française de janvier à mars à Nice, mais aussi à Paris, Narbonne, Mâcon, Pau, la Rochelle, Angoulème, Pontoise… L’occasion d’une belle reprise en forme de retrouvailles.
Un chemin initiatique entre féerie et rock’n’roll, en un très beau spectacle, remarquablement composé, dirigé et interprété. On suit les péripéties haletantes avec émotion, admiration et stupeur. Magistralement agencé, avec un rythme trépidant et une remarquable maîtrise des effets scéniques, ce spectacle ouvre brillamment le mandat d’Irina Brook à la tête du Théâtre National de Nice. Peer Gynt, flambeur rock. Iggy Pop et Sam Shepard ont mis la main à cette version joliment troussée de la pièce d’Ibsen. Irina Brook situe clairement sa version du côté de l’imagination triomphante. Un beau spectacle, bien construit, rondement mené. Peer Gynt au Barbican de Londres : une inoubliable version d’Ibsen, avec bande-son d’Iggy Pop. Une nouvelle adaptation vivifiante, audacieuse et mordante de la pièce, jouée live par un ensemble multiethnique ; […] Des moments de délicatesse chargés d’émotion et de philosophie, où l’on retient son souffle tout en étant assourdi par le silence absolu. | Swayambhu | Kuchipudi | Shantala Shivalingappa BACH – jour 1 | Sonia Wieder-Atherton – Shantala Shivalingappa Louvre Abu Dhabi, 30 mars / 6 avril 2018Shantala était au Louvre d’Abu Dhabi en ce début de mois, avec pas moins de deux spectacles programmés pour cette première saison inaugurale ! BACH – jour 1, son duo avec la violoncelliste Sonia Wieder-Atherton mis en scène par Stéphane Ricordel, était présenté en plein air, se fondant ainsi au coeur de l’architecture minérale de Jean Nouvel. Prolongeant ce moment de grâce, Swayambhu, récital de kuchipudi créé en 2010 était en recréation à l’occasion de sa programmation dans la première saison du prestigieux Louvre d’Abu Dhabi. Loin du choc des cultures (10% de la population émirati est indienne!), le spectacle a été longuement ovationné par un public conquis ! |

Impro Sharana, le concert pour une danseuse de Ferran Savall et Shantala Shivalingappa était en reprise à Porto ! En 2014, c’est à l’initiative du prestigieux Mercat de les Flors de Barcelone et de son directeur Francesc Casadeus que nos deux virtuoses se retrouvaient autour de ce projet commun, à l’occasion de la sortie de l’album IMPRO de Ferran Savall. Ce Concert pour une danseuse se crée autour de l’alliance subtile de la musique de Ferran et de la danse unique de Shantala, accompagnés de Driss El Maloumi (Oud), David Mayoral (Percussions), Jordi Gaspar (Contrebasse), Nedyalko Nedyalkov (Kaval), où le mouvement et la musique se construisent ensemble. © Impro Sharana 2014 | Gorgio Pace

Cie 111 Festival Montpellier Danse | 27-29 juin 2018 Dernier opus d’une trilogie féminine imaginée par Aurélien Bory, après Questcequetudeviens? pour Stéphanie Fuster et Plexus avec Kaori Ito, aSH marque sa rencontre avec Shantala Shivalingappa. (…) C’est au détour d’un festival à Düsseldorf que leur rencontre s’est nouée. Aurélien Bory a perçu entre eux-deux une forte convergence « presque irréelle ». Et d’affirmer qu’avec aSH « Shantala danse au-delà d’elle-même ». Fidèle à son travail à la beauté plastique indéniable, Aurélien Bory
entend faire l’expérience de la cendre comme « décor » de cette chorégraphie. « La cendre s’inscrit dans un cycle de naissance et de mort. Elle possède ainsi une potentialité de vie. Est-ce pour cela qu’elle est sacrée en Inde ? » se demande le créateur de la compagnie 111 installée à Toulouse. Shantala Shivalingappa va sous nos yeux se démultiplier pour donner à aSH les contours d’une épopée corporelle. « Sa danse effectue un balancier perpétuel quelque part entre mystique hindoue et physique quantique » dit encore Aurélien Bory, ancien étudiant en physique qui a bifurqué par le cirque, le théâtre, la danse. aSH est l’échappée belle de cette paire d’artistes sans frontière.
